After 4 years of serving in the US Navy, John returned to college to pursue a career in Humans Resources, but, after a serious work accident, John's direction changed.  He was led to start a career which would eventually evolve into what he does today.  Wierenga Asset Management, Inc. is a completely independent and objective financial services adviser helping families, individuals, and organizations to manage, allocate, and invest their assets.

John's financial services career started as a licensed, captive agent for an insurance company over 19 years ago. John then became the investment consultant for a local bank. In this position, John was licensed to offer mutual funds, annuities, and individual securities to bank customers.  After continued success in the banking business, John was hired by a national firm to build and manage investment programs inside smaller regional banks. This position soon expanded to several states in the Midwest and the South. As John's family continued to grow, the travel began to weigh on his time.

In late 1997, John was hired as President of AmeriPlan Financial Services, the investment subsidiary, of a local billion dollar bank with nearly 30 locations in Western Michigan.  The investment program was fully operational only 90 days after John's hire date. This included hiring experienced local advisors and training the bank employees.  In November 2001, John's position was eliminated when the bank was acquired by a large regional bank.

After more than a decade and working with thousands of people, John has concluded that most people seeking an adviser are looking for someone local who is experienced, honest, objective, and will foster a long-term relationship. That is why, in January of 2002, John started his own independent, fee-only registered investment advisory firm with the State of Michigan. John does not receive his compensation by commissions nor does he try to close a sale on a false set of return expectations.

Since founding Wierenga Asset Management, John received his CFCA® designation in 2005 from the National Association of Christian Financial Consultants and he also became a certified financial representative with Kingdom Advisors. John has served on the board of his church and his children's school. Recently, he was elected to the NACFC board and asked to serve as a director.
